Personal History: The Life And Times of Prompto Argentum

Personality:

Prompto is a bright, bubbly ray of sunshine who's role in the party is to diffuse tension and keep things as lighthearted as possible, for as long as possible. He prefers to crack jokes, offer good humour and isn't afraid to distract people from their woes with a bright smile and sometimes a song. He sometimes comes across as trying too hard because deep down, he isn't quite that light hearted. He carries a heavy past, a deeply sometimes crippling social anxiety and a lack of confidence in himself that sometimes bleeds through.

Determined and goal-oriented, Prompto can accomplish anything when he puts effort into it. When he decided that his life was not going how he wanted, with a gentle nudge from the Oracle, he was the one who put the work into changing. He took up running when he was twelve, and continues to use it to this day for training and as a way to handle his anxiety. When he emerged on the other side at fifteen he reinvtented himself. He mentioned to Noctis once that some of this cheer and persona is a bit of an act, so people will like him. Despite that admission, a lot of it became his personality, and he's quite genuine most of the time. In the toughest of times is when he finds he has to push himself.

He's passionate about photography and immensely grateful to Noctis, who became his first friend and really drew him out of his shell. He truly came into his own once Noctis was a permanent fixture in his life. He's naturally shy, and when encountering strangers, his anxiety manifests in a stutter. Noctis tends to be a buffer between him and the rest of the world at the best of times. In the worst times, he is forced to persevere on his own, and he does so with a surprising amount of resolve for his apparent nature.

Prompto is strong and self-sufficient. He learned to take care of himself, because no one was going to look after him. He has a strong desire to protect this friendship at all costs, and he glosses over some of the worst parts of his life to protect his friends' feelings. He has difficulty asking for help, or being the one in the position who needs to be protected.

He isn't afraid to run headlong into danger to save or protect his friends, less concerned about what is going to happen to him. He's determined and motivated - he joined the Crownsguard to ensure that his best friend had another protector in him. He fully believes in Noctis and his nature as the future of Lucis. He never doubted him, even if he still sees him as the lanky, bratty teenager he grew up with. When push comes to shove, Prompto will fall in line, every time.

He cherishes his friends as though they are family because frankly, he doesn't have one. When his mentor praises him, he laps it up. In all honesty, before Noctis, Prompto was a very sad, lonely person. He would do anything to keep that going for as long as he can.

Key themes:

Prompto's key themes are struggle, friendship and determination.

His past is incredibly traumatic, and more than he's consciously aware of. Having been created as a lab experiment and subjected to unknown horrors are likely a big contributing factor to his anxiety, and the fact he has a deep seated phobia of small spaces. Small dark places are his least favourite places to be. He grew up in a place that never really accepted him, from his family unit being largely absent since he was a small child, to a population that sees people like him as the enemy (more than he knows), he's been forced to struggle. Everything he's achieved and gotten hasn't come easy, he worked very hard to get there, and it's paid off.

His lack of connection to a family unit has him yearning for a connection with other people. His parents were largely absent and instead he turned to his newfound friends. As a child, he found making friends impossible due to his anxiety problems but taking that step towards Noctis rewarded him with three close friends he would wind up living and potentially dying with in the future. Their acceptance was a balm to his troubles and really helped shape him into a more rounded person, and bring him out of his shy shell.

Prompto is one determined individual. While losing weight was certainly not a requirement for being Noctis' friend, he thought it was and he poured everything he had into it. It was not easy. It took all of his courage to walk up to Noctis that day at school and speak to him. He took the necessary steps to become a Crownsguard to protect his best friend from now until the future, whatever future they would have. The process was grueling and difficult, but he didn't back down. When Insomnia falls, he doesn't back down either, staying at Noctis' side, determined to make his friend the best king he can be.

Main Motivation:

Prompto's life has been defined and changed by Noctis. While Lunafreya did give him a nudge in Noctis' direction, it was Noctis himself who brought about the most drastic changes. He changed his physical appearance and worked on his confidence to be able to approach him. He befriended him, and stepped into his world with one foot while keeping the other in his own, instead pulling Noctis into it. He distinguished himself by being someone to see Noctis as a real person not just the Crown Prince of Lucis.

Aside from changing himself to be what Noctis needed, that love and friendship led him on his career path to be a Crownsguard. He was subjected to rigorous training, and he worked incredibly hard to put himself in a position to be helpful. Without Noctis, Prompto wonders what he would have to go back to, with Insomnia gone, but more than that he wants to propel him forward into a future where he can be their ruler.

He's gone way past his comfort zone and beyond for his best friend and he would die for him without a hesitation. There is no one on Eos more important to Prompto than Noctis. He has never seen him for his title, his influence, but he sees him as the individual which ultimately is what cemented his position at his side.

Skills:

With little training, Prompto is an expert marksman. His weapon of choice is a pair of handguns. He's also been known to wield a submachine gun, a sniper rifle, a bazooka, with a knife as his choice for stealth/close range encounters. He tends to avoid close range encounters as much as possible. He's also wielded a wide variety of Imperial technological weapons. He's excellent at stealth and can bring down the enemy with one strike of the knife. Despite his lack of proficiency, he can be seen wielding in the short term any of the weapons in Noctis' arsenal (through the link strikes), but typically he doesn't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Prompto employs six techniques when it comes to his gun skills:

Piercer - A technique that breaks through the armor of the target to stagger and debuff the enemy, lowering their defense.

Starshell - A technique that lights up the room and weakens daemons.

Recoil - A technique that causes the enemy's machinery to overload to deal heavy damage. (Machine technique)

Gravisphere - A technique that launches an orb and sucks enemies into it to deal continuous damage. (Machine technique - technically a magic cast)

Trigger Happy - Prompto unleashes a barrage of shots at the enemy in two waves and culminates in a single shot of higher damage. Has a high likelihood of adding status effects depending on the gun, stagger or break appendages of the enemy in question. If he gets a critical, all shots will deal critical damage.

Snapshot - Allows him to take photos during battle.

Limit Break - Allows Prompto to deal more than 9999 damage to an enemy with Recoil or the final shot of Trigger Happy.

Aside of his battle techniques, Prompto is a natural mechanic, likely due to the genetic modification and has a good grasp of repairing Imperial technology. He has a barcode on his wrist that allows for access to Niflheim bases.

He's also a photographer as his hobby and can employ a wide variety of techniques to get the best pictures. He has had several photographs published over the course of the story.

Prompto also has access to Noctis' dimensional space, the Armiger, in which he keeps pretty much anything he likes. It's a magical effect granted to him by Noctis as a member of his Crownsguard.
